Dimitri Mendeleev displayed several attitudes when he was formatting the Periodic Table. One of the attitudes that he displayed was that he was patient. Mendeleev had patiently written the properties of elements on pieces of card and organized the cards when he suddenly realized that by arranging the elements cards in order of increasing atomic weight and certain types of elements regularly occurred. It was tough to establish a pattern as at that time, only less than 60 elements had been discovered, and Mendeleev had successfully did that with his patience. Mendeleev was also determined. When he knew that something was predicted wrongly, he did not gave up. He continued to predict until it was correct. Although it was not easy, he continued to persevere as he was determined to get the correct properties of the Periodic Table.
The common characteristics of the three elements discovered within Mendeleev’s lifetime were that they were all named after the latin name of the country the inventor was born in.
Atomic number 101 was named after Mendeleev. There are also other
elements named after other scientists. The other examples are Einsteinium, which is named after Albert Einstein. He was a was a German-born theoretical physicist and had many contributions to physics. (Information obtained from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einsteinium) The other example was Curium, which is named after Maria Skłodowska-Curiea. She was a French physicist and chemist, and had been an icon in the scientific world and has inspired many tributes and recognitions. (Information obtained from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curium)
One of the similarity was that the elements are listed in order of increasing atomic number. The difference was that the Mordern Periodic Table is more organised than the table produced by Mendeleev. Another difference is that the Mordern Periodic Table has more elements that are discovered than the one discovered by Mendeleev.
In my view, I think that the article had been fair in judging the work of the scientists. The author focused on the contributions on Mendeleev and I agree that Mendeleev should deserve most of the credits. Mendeleev was the person who contributed the most to the Periodic Table, and thus I think that the article was fair to focus on Mendeleev and not the other scientists, who only helped.
